As far as the serial number, there were no serial numbers before 1968. 24 would make more sense, and would put the rifle at 1976 for manufacturing.

It has a 22" barrel with JM stamped on it, and a serial number that begins with 34. So the barrel stamp is for dating a pre-serial number rifle, that stopped in 1968 I think.
You stamp of JM does not match that code type, the first letter is the month and the second is the year.
